What is your superpower? We all have one. It doesn’t have to be flying or becoming invisible. It can be being good at relating to people, or designing spaces, or writing, or cleaning, or being organized. Whatever it is, there is a place for a superhero like you somewhere in the world. And, figuring out your superpower can be the key to finding your real success.
Here are three criteria to figuring yours out:
1. What is something you’re good at from as far back as you can remember?
Think back to when you were a young child. What were you naturally drawn to and became good at? When we are children, we are not yet aware of the world’s limitations. Nor do we have bills to pay or other responsibilities yet. What is that something you would love to do if you had all the time and money in the world?
2. What is something that you love doing so much it takes up your entire being?
What makes you forget to eat or makes you have restless nights? I remember when I first finished 25,000 words of a novel. I worked on it day in and day out. Fortunately then, I had just broken up with my boyfriend, so I had a lot of free time and desperately needed a distraction that would completely consume me. Many things have done so in the past: making music, drawing, dancing…but there is something about writing that’s completely freeing. All I need is my brain and my laptop. The others took a little bit more to make happen, but writing is something I love and definitely takes up my entire being, so here I am today, sharing this insight with you.
3. What is that something that is in service to others?
Every superhero in every comic, TV show, or blockbuster movie has one thing in common: they are always doing something for the common good. They are public servants to the world’s safety, and if they existed in real life, we not only would be in great debt to them, somehow they would probably get paid well for doing what they do. It is the same concept with your superpower. As they say, “No man is an island.” We are an interconnected world, and the people who are in the biggest service to others doing what they love are not only the happiest people around, they are also usually the best paid.
Let me know what you came up with in the comments below.
Now, what is the next step when a superhero finds out they have a superpower? They have to cultivate it. They have to practice. They have to get started, no matter how small or big. And, lastly, they have to get out there and find the people to use their superpower for.
So get out there fellow superhero! One by one, we will make the world a better place in our own small or big way.
